BIFM 2011 Award SuccessInterserve’s South East Regional Prime Contract, delivered through joint venture organisation PriDE, has won the Judge’s Special Recognition Award at the British Institute of Facilities Management Awards (BIFM) 2011 for its redevelopment of the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) at Headley Court. This is the second year running that an Interserve contract has won this accolade for its ongoing commitment to supporting troops on the frontline; whether it is through our everyday support services or by building facilities that ensure wounded soldiers receive the best possible levels of care. Through commitment and an overwhelming desire to positively impact the lives of injured service personnel, PriDE, working with Interserve Construction, provided a state of the art rehabilitation complex at Surrey-based DMRC Headley Court, designed and built to incorporate the latest technologies, whilst driving value for money and sustainability. The points of comparison with last year are significant; DMRC Headley Court is focused on creating state-of-the-art rehabilitation facilities for wounded service personnel, particularly those returning from Afghanistan. And last year, Interserve joint venture Landmarc Support Services, was given the same award for the provision of vital training facilities for soldiers about to enter the Afghan theatre – neatly giving recognition for both sides of the Afghan experience. The Judge’s Special Recognition category carries particular significance within the industry because it is only awarded if the judge deems a project to be an outstanding contender, rather than being available as a matter of course each year. PriDE was also a finalist for the Impact on Organisation and Workplace Award for transforming a former IT centre into a sustainable, state of the art Defence Food Services Wing, which has revolutionised military training. |

Local Education Partnership Awards 2011At the recent Education Investor Awards 2011, Sandwell Futures won the Local Education Partnership (LEP) of the Year Award beating off seven other finalists. Interserve is a principal shareholder of Sandwell Futures Limited which was set up to deliver Sandwell’s Building Schools for the Future programme. The judges selected Sandwell Futures ahead of the other finalists due to the success that the company has demonstrated in meeting the full education vision of its client, Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, in the Black Country. This has included the completion of a £42 million PFI school in Rowley Regis, a £24 million Design and Build project at Smethwick with three other Design and Build projects under construction, at Tipton, Wednesbury and Oldbury. Sandwell Futures has also managed the ICT and Change Management activities within the schools including the roll out of over 1,000 netbook computers to pupils at Rowley Regis, with more to come at the other schools. The LEP has been leading the change in the way that education is delivered through the use of technology. The LEP also manages the facilities management and lifecycle contracts for each of the schools. Since its formation in July 2009, Interserve as part of the LEP, has been working together with supply chain partners Cambridge Education, Agilisys and Barclays to provide 50 apprenticeships as well as over £35 million of works packages to businesses within the Borough. Another £32 million has been delivered to businesses within 50 miles of Sandwell. In addition the company, together with Interserve, has been actively involved in supporting the Council in inspiring young people so as to increase their aspirations. This has included motivational talks, reading with children and advice on how to compete in the modern world. |

PFM Awards 2010 - BP and Interserve win Partnership AwardInterserve and BP Chemicals have won the Partners in FM - Manufacturing award at the PFM Awards 2010. This is the 17th year of the Premises and Facilities Management Awards, which recognise best practice in partnerships between support services and FM suppliers and their clients. Interserve’s partnership with BP Hull began in August 1999, providing a host of industrial services within a highly complex, safety-critical environment. 10 years on the relationship has evolved to become one of the largest support services contracts in the UK, delivering a £14 million combined industrial services and total FM package, with Interserve and BP working together as a single delivery team. Judge John de Lucy commented: “From the beginning of the visit Interserve was clearly a trusted partner. I was impressed by the growth of the partnership over a 10-year period, which demonstrated first-class delivery of a total FM and industrial services package and a clear perception that Interserve staff are fully integrated with the BP business. Cost and efficiency savings have been delivered and there is a strong sense of pride amongst Interserve staff that they are contributing to BP’s business goals. Moving forward to deliver services jointly to other occupiers on the Saltend Chemicals Park is also a sure sign that they have an excellent partnership - a worthy winner in this competitive category.” The panel of judges looked for evidence of a good partnership, its achievements and examples of innovation as well as how partners are working towards sustainability goals. |

KMI+ Success at Specialist awards 2010KMI+’s, Barrow Town Centre Flood Relief project has won the Project Excellence category at the CN (Construction News) Specialist Awards 2010 held in March 2010. The awards, attended by over 600 leaders of specialist contracting in the construction industry, were held to identify and celebrate the key players in the industry. Barrow town centre has been affected by flooding for over 16 years, KMI’s solution to alleviate the problem involved the construction of a 25.6m diameter and 29.5m deep detention tank, designed to hold over 10 million litres of storm flows and a new intercepting sewer. The project prevented the re-occurrence of foul water flooding to 71 town centre properties, and offered protection to another 1,300. The project team encountered difficult ground conditions during the tunnel drive causing concerns that the scheme may not meet key project milestone. Following discussions with the Local Environment Health Officer and residents a decision to carry out the tunnel drive 24 hours, seven days a week was agreed. This ensured the regulatory date was secure and the original programme was not exceeded. The project was successfully completed to programme in March 2009 at a cost of £14.8 million. The judges commented, “This is an example of a difficult but competently run project that satisfies the main elements of the category criteria”. |

Green Apple AwardInterserve at Carlisle Hospital has received a Green Apple Award at the House of Commons for project managing the construction of an on-site water bore hole at the hospital. Judges of the scheme recognised Interserve’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental best practise through the water bore hole project which began in 2004 and is anticipated to be complete later this year. Upon completion the water bore hole will provide the Cumberland Infirmary with its own water supply. The initial proposal for the water bore hole arose from the increasing water usage at the site after the operating hours of the clinics were extended to include evenings and weekends. Following this, the true value of the project was realised when Carlisle was flooded in 2005 and the hospital’s water supply was cut off, leaving the hospital running on emergency power. |

Building Awards 2009Our Leeds BSF team triumphed at the annual Building Awards ceremony in London being named Integrated Supply Team of the Year. These prestigious awards are organised by Building Magazine to recognise the very best in the construction industry and the citation given to Project Services reads: "It's hard to imagine a BSF project without collaborative working, but the winner here proves that if done well, it can push the finished product that extra mile. Comprising secondary schools for 6,000 pupils as well as leisure centres, this scheme was one of the largest BSF projects and yet was one of the first to reach financial close and start on site - and one of the quickest to complete. Nobody has any illusions about the complexity of delivering a project of this scale, and the fact that it was done so successfully is a credit to Interserve and a testament to its efforts to ensure collaborative working throughout the process, from signing the contract to building on site." |
