Facts and figures
- The Adult Mental Healthcare Unity at the Wrexham Maelor hospital has won the Best Healthcare Project award at the LABC CYMRU Building Excellence Awards 2011
- Addition to original scheme
- Minimal impact to programme
Part of the Designed for Life framework programme, the projects have re-provided adult and older people's mental health services in modern facilities on the Wrexham Maelor Hospital site.
The new facilities include; a 44-bed, two-storey adult mental health unit, with two 18-bed acute wards, an eight-bed Psychological Intensive Care Unit, an assessment suite, ECT suite as well as substantial shared activity facilities and supporting accommodation. The Older Adult Unit (OAU) comprises of a two-storey, 28-bed unit.
Following securing additional funding, the OAU was added to the scheme after the AMU OBC was submitted. The team had to work up detailed design, cost planning and procurement very quickly to avoid overall programme being delayed.
The whole team responded to the challenge in a truly collaborative manner, working together to minimise effect of the late additional work. The Older People's Unit was successfully handed over in December 2009 and the Adult Unit in September 2010.
