Facts and figures

  • Client: Highways Agency
  • Value: £5.5 million

Interserve's involvement in the A5 / M69 signalisation scheme comprised widening the approach roads and exit slip roads from the M69, the construction of retaining walls, widening the circulatory carriageway, surfacing and signalising the junction.

Works included the provision of a balancing pond, installation of new road signs and road markings, and provision of a combined footway / cycleway around the junction. There was extensive traffic management to carry out the works safely and reduce the impact on all stakeholders.

The highway works along the A5 from Sketchley Island to the Hinckley Knight Hotel (Stretton Bends) comprised the provision of a footway / cycleway on the south side, and a footway on the north side of the carriageway. Work also included the provision of two dedicated mobile speed camera hardstanding areas, installation of new vehicle-activated signs powered by renewable energy, road markings, and the provision of a new pedestrian refuge.

Achievements

  • Environmental protection was installed for the local great crested newt population comprising pit fall trapping, transfer and amphibian fencing in the vicinity of four ponds surrounding the area
  • Re-utilised existing material from the AA5 / M69 roundabout for fill on the A5 Stretton Bends section, avoiding additional lorry movements off-site and reducing waste
  • Revisited programme and reduced traffic management phases from four to two phases, which facilitated early completion of bulk earthworks to the roundabout
  • Early clearance of trees and shrubs ensured the work did not impact on the bird nesting season
