Facts and figures

  • In the first year of the car sharing scheme, a total of 566 journeys by car, rail and bicycle were recorded, totalling in excess of 48,000 miles. This is the same as driving twice around the circumference of the Earth!
  • Staff who took part were commended and were incentivised to try and beat the results in the coming year

Why did we do this?

Interserve is committed to a sustainable approach in conducting our business. Reducing our environmental impact is very much part of our commitment and this initiative was designed to do just that.

How did we do this?

Interserve's car sharing scheme was first trialled at our Yorkshire regional office. We undertook a survey of current journeys, assessing the feasibility of sharing. Collecting data of shared car journeys, train and bicycle use for business trips at our Castleford office, we created a log book for personnel to register their intended journeys, facilitating matching up and sharing transport. The launch of the initiative included an awareness campaign and a monthly raffle of those who used the scheme to encourage employees to participate.

Benefits

  • Reduced costs, saving around £6,500 in fuel
  • Enhanced engagement with and between employees
  • Support of Interserve's RENEWABLES approach
  • Contribution towards Interserve's environmental objectives and targets
