ATR Pirbright, advanced staff leadership school

Facts and figures

Interserve has designed and built a modern, flexible training facility to support Army Instructor education in leadership and command, at ATR Pirbright in Surrey.

The fractured nature of training provision for Army Instructors was a key driver for the project; what was required was a 'centre of excellence' where instructor training could be brought together in one purpose-built facility, in an environment where recruit training already occurred. The direct involvement with real recruits could then be a core element of the Instructors' training syllabus.

The Advanced Staff Leadership School now provides a variety of training facilities and associated office and administration areas, and has been constructed sympathetically with other developments on the Pirbright site. Co-location of all office and administration facilities with classroom areas has significantly improved the day-to-day running and delivery of Instructor training programmes and additional foundations and structures are already in place to facilitate any future extension.

The Interserve solution took account of all safety, environmental and sustainability issues. For example, the building was positioned to maximise natural daylight whilst minimising solar gain and sensitive landscaping ensured the surrounding area was planted with trees and herbaceous borders in line with wider site landscaping plans. Solar control glazing was provided in the main entrance area and the installation of energy efficient services are reducing energy consumption and running costs.
