Demolition in a conservation area
Facts and figures
The Troodos Station is a British Retained Site situated at the peak of the Troodos mountains in the Republic of Cyprus
Why did we do this?
Interserve's work was to decommission old fuel installations at the Troodos Station, including the demolition of redundant fuel storage housings.
As the station is in a designated Special Area of Conservation and a Special Protection Area in the Republic of Cyprus, the objective was to minimise impact to the National Park area.
How did we do this?
An Environmental Management Plan identified the need to protect the black pines, orchids and bats found in the area.
Working under license, the work was scheduled in phases to ensure bats were not hibernating when the buildings were demolished and that orchids had released their seeds before work proceeded. Active supervision ensured our mitigation arrangements prevented damage to black pines.
Effective waste management ensured that pollution was negated, including the safe disposal of hazardous waste (oil sludge).
Benefits
- Minimal disruption to bats during demolition
- Damage to orchids prevented
- Pollution prevented
- Increase environmental awareness among contract management team
- Best practice example
