BP Petrochemicals, Hull
Delivering safely, efficiently and in partnership
With an annual production capacity of over 1.5 million tonnes and covering 370 acres, the Saltend Chemical Park in Hull is a strategic part of BP’s worldwide operations.
The Park is owned and operated by BP and supports some seven global manufacturing units, two of which belong to BP for the production of Europe’s largest supply of acetic acid (500,000 tonnes a year). Processing such volumes of chemicals safely and efficiently requires an extensive ongoing management, maintenance and renewal regime of considerable scale.
Traditionally the diverse services necessary to support the site were provided by individual specialist organisations such as instrument technicians, pipefitters, welders, electricians, scaffolders, painters, insulators, joiners, caterers, cleaners, gardeners, security, maintenance engineers and many others. Each of these had its own interface with the company’s managers and worked with its own priorities and schedule in mind. BP wanted a different approach and, in Interserve, found its ideal partner.
Interserve’s management approach, the breadth of its service capabilities and its exceptional safety record were critical factors in BP’s choice. It won a three-year contract to provide a range of industrial services in the highly complex, time-critical environment and took on the role of project co-ordinator, giving BP a single point of contact instead of having to manage multiple interfaces. Ten years on, the relationship has evolved to become one of the largest support services contracts in the UK, delivering a £14 million combined industrial services and total facilities management package, with Interserve and BP working together as a single delivery team.
Services include insulation, access, civils, painting, joinery, asbestos, mechanical, electrical, shutdown and project management plus a comprehensive range of facilities management services including estate management and maintenance, catering, hotel services, cleaning, reprographics, security, reception, portering, logistics, laundry and linen and postal services.
