Interserve have a cohort of 23 students at Stephenson College. They are studying for the Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment and an NVQ Level 3 in Construction Contracting Operations, these qualifications make up an advanced apprenticeship framework.
The choice of units in these qualifications ensures the suitability for job roles in the construction industry such as:
- Civil Engineering
- Quantity Surveying
- Construction management
- Facilities management
The specific units of the Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment are:
- Health & Safety
- Construction Technology
- Sustainable Construction
- Building Technology
- Project Management
- Project in Construction
- Science and Materials
- Measuring Tendering and Estimating
- Mechanical and Electrical Services
- Construction Design Procedures
These units are taught over a series of block releases at Stephenson College. The initial block is 5 weeks followed by two more 4 week blocks in the first year, completing the second year with two further 4 week blocks.
All first year apprentices stay in local accommodation, provided with bed, breakfast and evening meal. There are usually 2 or more apprentices staying in local landlord/lady houses known by and approved by the college with DBS clearance.
(Second year accommodation to be confirmed pending discussions with Interserve – this could be in Nottingham – TBC)
In addition to the units of study at college, the apprentices also undertake an NVQ level 3 in Construction Contracting Operations as part of an advanced apprenticeship. The NVQ element supports the learning pathways to suit their personal job roles. This is operated directly by Stephenson College with lecturers visiting the apprentices in their place of work during their site placements throughout the year, over the two year apprenticeship period.
After the first five months of the Interserve apprenticeship programme at Stephenson College, we are pleased to report that we have a 100% retention rate. We expect this to be maintained as the 1st year cohort are very well motivated, they have achieved well in their initial college block and they are working hard towards their NVQ units whilst on their site placement.
Progression from the Level 3 advanced apprenticeship to the next stage of their training in September 2017 will be into higher education. This will be working towards a level 4/5 higher apprenticeship and then onto Level 6 degree apprenticeship. By this time, the new construction apprenticeship standards will be approved by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), providing further options for study and experience from level 4 to level 6.
