Pearl Gas to Liquids project

Qatar Shell - Pearl Gas to Liquids project

From training to maintenance

Pearl Gas to Liquids (GTL), a project jointly developed by Qatar Petroleum and Shell, is the world's largest gas-to-liquids plant with peak capabilities of converting 1.6 bcf of natural gas per day into 140,000 barrels per day of cleaner-burning liquid transport fuel and other liquid products and 120,000 barrels per day of natural gas liquids and ethane.

The onshore processing facility takes its feed from Qatar’s North Field, the world’s biggest non-associated gas field that holds around 15 per cent of global reserves.

Both the scale of the facility and the sophistication of the process engineering are breathtaking – and Interserve's Madina Group provides training services to staff and contractors, as well as delivering on-going plant maintenance and construction services.

A long-term relationship

Qatar Shell and Madina Group began working together in 2008, when Qatar International Safety Centre (QISC), a Madina Group company, won a three-year contract to supply health, safety, environment, leadership and supervisory training services to the tens of thousands of people associated with the construction of the Pearl GTL facility. Once the facility was operational, Qatar Shell awarded QISC a three-year term contract to provide HSSE training services on a call-off basis.

Madina went on to win a five-year contract in 2010 to provide multi-disciplinary maintenance services at the facility, working with Shell through a one team approach. A team of over 300 provides preventative and reactive maintenance services on a 24/7 basis and has several achievements to its credit, including winning Contractor of the Quarter (Q3 2012) and Pride in Production awards.

Shell awarded another five-year contract to Madina in 2012 to provide multi-disciplinary construction services, including plant modifications and upgrade works both onshore and offshore. Completed projects include a ‘long range acoustic device’ system that alerts shipping to the existence of offshore platforms through strong acoustic signals, and new kitchen facilities serving meals to over 2,000 people.

Achievements

  • Two and a half years now completed without an LTI
  • More than two million safe man hours completed LTI free
  • Over 401,000 training sessions conducted, reaching over 136,000 workers.

Pit-stop team delivers

Three days’ notice, over 100 Madina employees took part in the facility’s first ever “pit stop” shutdown, ensuring sections of the plant were safely and securely isolated to enable statutory inspections and repairs.
