RMD Australia drives Bulahdelah bypass project

RMD Australia has worked alongside its customer, Baulderstone, to support the construction of the Bulahdelah bypass in New South Wales, providing a bespoke traveling, formwork and shoring solution to cater for the exact requirements of the project.

The project involves the relocation of the Pacific Highway through the slopes of Bulahdelah Mountain to bypass the Bulahdelah township, which is located some 75km North of Newcastle.

RMD Australia provided key elements for the construction of the bypass's Super T Bridge abutments as well as its two cast in-situ bridges. Using a formwork solution comprising Superslim Soldiers and Aluminium Beams, RMD Australia designed a system that was able to travel within the set limits governed by the unique shape and radius of each of the six bridge deck spans, enabling the casting of in-situ parapets.

Two 9 metre units were supplied comprising of 2 x 4.5 metre sections each, located on opposing bridge spans enabling Baulderstone to pour nine metres of parapet each day, whilst stripping, cleaning and resetting the other set of equipment ready for pouring the following day. The formwork solution ran on steel channels anchored to the bridge deck, which help guide the system along the bridge.

Tom Ryan, Bridge Structures Engineer, commented: "The solution provided by RMD Australia managed to meet our on-site needs, allowing work to be carried out efficiently, while we were able to rely on constant technical support to aid the continued success of the project."

Mark Stanley for RMD Australia, said: "At Bulahdelah RMD Australia has provided a system that allows workers access to the underside of the bridge deck, above the pour, while also maintaining the high level of health and safety that's required when working 10 metres above the ground.

"The project represents a significant development for the residents of Bulahdelah and, as part of the Pacific Highway, will improve the transport network in New South Wales.

"Working with Baulderstone, we have been able to deliver a tailored solution that provides a cost effective and efficient method of pouring and forming in-situ, which has helped contribute to a successful project."

Construction of the bypass started in 2011 and was completed by the end of 2013, with RMD Australia's involvement ending in 2012.
