Boosting production by high pressure/high sour gas injection.

Birba Gas injection project

During its service to the Oman oil and gas industry for more than 48 years, The Oman Construction Company (TOCO) has placed itself as a symbol of ‘Operational Excellence’ in its chosen areas of business. Since 1965, the company has been a ‘Trusted Partner’ of major national and international oil and gas asset owners and operators in the Sultanate. TOCO is part of Oman’s oil and gas legacy with several ‘Firsts’ to its credit. The list includes construction of the first pipeline, flow line, production station, tank farm, overhead power line. In 1967, TOCO moved the first rig at Fahud. TOCO has been associated with PDO since beginning of its operations in the Sultanate of Oman.

TOCO was awarded Birba Gas Injection Project by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) through their existing On-plot Delivery Contractor on 25-May-2011. This construction contract was rated highly critical due to its design pressure (510 bar) and high sour gas content.

The scope included civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation construction works of:

  • New well pad of High pressure and Heavy wall Thickness (40 mm) along with Flow line of thickness of 25 mm
  • Demolition and reconstruction of piping of existing well pad of 40 mm thickness.

The challenge

  • Construction of tie-in pad within the vicinity of high pressure gas line
  • Construction in high H2S (more than 500 ppm) hazardous environment
  • Exposure to 900 bar hydro testing and 488 bar sensitive leak testing
  • Welding and radiography of high wall thickness pipes.

The solution

TOCO implemented Highest level of HSE vigilance, training and special PPEs to avoid H2S exposure and facilitate safe working. The work site entry was restricted and access controlled during high pressure testing. The weld process was closely monitored and controlled and carried out by highly experienced welders, resulting weld completion with “ZERO REPAIR”. World class project management and project control methodologies were followed resulting timely completion meeting project objectives.

Safety records

No LTI, Total Man-hours worked: 120,500.

Operational Excellence

The successful completion of the mechanical scope is commendable considering the criticality of the project. Birba Gas Injection project re-affirms and demonstrates TOCO’s unparalleled ability to deliver safety critical and schedule critical jobs in the most efficient manner.
