Sandwell College

Interserve successfully handed over Sandwell College 11 days earlier than scheduled.

Sandwell College

Opened to students 27 February 2012, the impressive 25,300m2 landmark college building is set to raise education standards for students across Birmingham and the Black Country.

Set to accommodate up to 10,000 full and part-time students, the new college has some truly special features, one being an aircraft cabin simulator, which utilises the front section fuselage of a Boeing 737 giving Travel and Tourism students a first hand insight into the real life experience of working in a modern aircraft. Other key elements include:

  • State of the art computer suites
  • Purpose built construction workshops
  • Engineering laboratories
  • Fashion and photography studios
  • A four court sports hall
  • A training dental surgery
  • Dance studio
  • 170 seat theatre
  • An automotive centre.

The input of Interserve has contributed greatly to the success of this project. Measures used by the division have resulted in a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’. Forming approximately £13 million of the total project value, the mechanical, electrical and plumbing elements of the scheme included a very broad scope of works, with some very innovative technologies, equipment and materials used.

Innovation included ‘Mepla’ tube and fittings, ‘iTrack’ bus bar lighting systems for areas in which there was no suspended ceiling, projector/mirror lighting was used to achieve the optimum distribution of light, ‘Simbal’ curly flexes for suspended power supplies in the college’s workshop areas to allow pendants to be raised and lowered without putting stress on cables and pressfit carbon steel giving faster and cleaner installations.

Prefabrication was utilised where possible by Interserve in order to address a number of challenges. Pipework modules and boiler plantrooms were manufactured off site, a lighting system with pre-wired flexible connections and central hubs was also utilised which reduced wiring requirements and allowed a wire-way for other services.
