New high-tech teenage and young adult unit at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

Christie NHS Foundation TrustThe Palatine Road Treatment Centre integrates the Young Oncology Unit (YOU) and haematology and transplant unit at The Christie into one fit-for-purpose state-of-the-art unit.

The facilities

The new centre ensures that teenagers and young adults with cancer receive world-class exemplary treatment and care in an environment appropriate for them. It includes outpatients on the ground floor, 31 specialist inpatient rooms on the first floor, and on the second floor the facilities include a gym, music room, relaxation area, rehabilitation, support services and relatives’ accommodation.

Programme of work

This is one of a series of projects that Interserve is delivering for The Christie NHS Foundation Trust through the ProCure21+ Framework.

The project had to be delivered within a fixed programme and tight budget with the potential risks of working in a live hospital environment and ensuring our works did not impact upon or disrupt the existing hospital and welfare of the patients.

The majority of the funding for the project had been raised through the Christie charity and we had to ensure that the investment provided the best possible facility to enhance the patient experience.

Personalised features

Through the use of bold graphics, the team has created an inspirational sense of place and a way to assist people in navigating their way around the unit. These graphics have also been used to assist in reducing anxiety which has an indirect connection to feeling nauseous, a common side effect of chemotherapy.

The ability to personalise their space is very important to the patients so the inpatient bedrooms have been installed with magnetic notice boards and remote control LED adjustable mood lighting. Wall cabinets incorporate a pull-down bed providing overnight accommodation for relatives.

The project was registered under the Considerate Constructors Scheme and attained a national silver award. The project also achieved a BREEAM rating of 'Very Good'.
