Truro Flood Defence Scheme

Excellent relationships with the local community.

Truro Flood Defence Scheme The Truro Tidal Defence Scheme involved replacement of a 296m length of the tidal quay with a sheet pile wall supported by ground anchors, and a cathodic protection system to prolong the life of the new quay. The new design extends the life of the asset, which delivers a level of protection to 31 residents and 181 commercial properties.

Sustainable Project Delivery

Local Delivery Team: All of the site management team were based in the South West region; the majority from Cornwall. Local small and medium suppliers and labour was used throughout construction, with 89% of sub contractors being based in the South West region.

This local approach mitigated the requirement to use on site generators for the welfare and welding plant prevented 12000 litres of diesel from being used on site, saving £8.5k and 24T of CO2 emmissions.

The site team sourced high efficiency and low engery plant and equipment, promoting a “switch off” policy throughout construction.

“A local Cornwall recycling facility was used for general waste / aggregate recycling. Interserve helped the facility management by providing advice to enable it to broaden its capability to serve the EA Truro site. As a result, the facility is recycling more diverse waste for all of its local customers.” Environment Agency Representative.

Conclusion

The team focused on every challenge throughout the design and construction of Truro Tidal Defence Scheme and sought innovative and practical solutions to these challenges. We collaborated extremely well and communicated effectively with the general public and local businesses that used the quay.

The team’s innovative and creative thinking resulted in a no compromise construction phase achieving efficiencies in cost and programme, improved health & safety and environmental protection, and a sustainable legacy to be enjoyed by future generations.

We successfully completed works on time and within our client’s budget. Our site teams formed excellent relationships with existing quay users and local residents.

"It was great to be able to link up one of our high profile Flood Defence Projects with the Waste Industry to facilitate the mutually beneficial use of recycled aggregate. "
