Interserve completes £2.5m waste transfer station construction
Interserve, the international services, maintenance and building group, has completed the £2.5 million design and construction of a waste transfer station in Alfreton, Derbyshire. It will be operated by HW Martin Waste Ltd.
The ‘Clover Nook’ waste transfer station is the first facility to be brought on-line as part of the joint waste management contract for Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council which Interserve, in a joint venture with United Utilities, is currently operating.
It has been designed and constructed to handle up to 50,000 tonnes per annum of Derbyshire’s municipal waste. Waste is brought into the site in refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) and transferred within the main building to large bulker lorries. These bulkers then take the waste to a suitable receptor, allowing the RCVs to get back on the road quickly and efficiently.
The facility was officially opened on 13 July 2010 by Councillor Robin Baldry, Chairman of Derbyshire County Council, and Councillor John Allsop, Executive Member for Recycling and Technology.
Chris Williams, Interserve’s Construction Manager, said: “We put together a first‑rate team to ensure a top quality site. The site allows a quick turnaround for operational traffic, maximising the efficiency of the site. We are delighted with the success of the project despite a tight construction programme.”
