Interserve wins University of Greenwich contract

by Interserve Press Office | Feb 07, 2011

Interserve, the international support services and construction group, has won a £960,000, three-year contract to clean the University of Greenwich’s three campuses. These are at: Avery Hill, in the south-east London district of Eltham; Greenwich, in the historic London borough; and Medway, in Chatham Maritime, Kent.

Interserve will provide daily cleaning, janitorial and porterage services across this 70,000 square metre estate, supporting 23,000 students and 2,000 staff on a daily basis. The estate includes sports and leisure facilities, canteens, theatres, lecture halls, libraries and common areas.

The 100 staff transferring to Interserve will benefit from Interserve’s Cleaning Apprenticeship, backed by Asset Skills, the Sector Skills Council for facilities management and cleaning. This apprenticeship has been developed and piloted by Interserve to offer employees the opportunity to develop their job-related skills.

Tony Sanders, Managing Director - Commercial at Interserve, commented:
“This contract with the University of Greenwich represents an excellent opportunity for Interserve to add significant value to the university’s prestigious estate.  We are also excited to be welcoming these many new staff to our business, where I am sure they will benefit from the work we have been doing in leading the development of the Cleaning Apprenticeship.”

Lee Devlin, Head of Campus Services, University of Greenwich, commented:
“One of the significant reasons for choosing Interserve is their commitment to reducing our impact on the environment, utilising our supply chain in this way ensures we have a sustainable and cost-efficient approach to cleaning across our campuses.”

Interserve, through its RENEWABLES sustainability framework, will be providing the University of Greenwich with a green cleaning solution using energy-efficient cleaning equipment, enzyme-based cleaning chemicals and microfibre cleaning technology.

About University of Greenwich

The University of Greenwich is a large university with three campuses - in Greenwich, at the Old Royal Naval College, a World Heritage site; in Avery Hill, south-east London, set among 86 acres of parkland; and in Medway, at an elegant Edwardian red-brick campus in Chatham Maritime. The university is home to a thriving community of nearly 29,000 students, one in five of them postgraduate, and combines strong regional, national and international links with a record for excellence in research and a mission for access to higher education.

The university carried out more than £15 million of research and consultancy for companies, research councils and other public and private bodies last year. The quality of the university's research work has been recognised in the award of three Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher & Further Education and four recent Times Higher Education awards.

Alongside its major economic, social and cultural contribution, the university prides itself on its high standards of teaching, careers guidance and personal support. The two most recent Sunday Times University Guides have placed Greenwich at the top of the London league table for student satisfaction. In the 2011 Sunday Times Guide, Greenwich was ranked 26th overall for student satisfaction, placing it among the top quarter of all UK universities. Greenwich also topped the publication's national league table for student satisfaction in a variety of subjects including Civil, Chemical and other Engineering courses, Law, and Medical Sciences and Pharmacy. The Sunday Times added that students at the Greenwich campus "have some of the most exquisite university grounds in the country".

People from more than 100 countries choose to study at Greenwich, as part of an international student community of 5,000. The university also has an extensive international network of partnerships with universities and overseas colleges.
