With Christmas just around the corner, there's nothing like having a bit of a de-clutter to create some much-needed space! With this in mind, kind-hearted employees at Interserve, the international support services and construction group are making a last-minute appeal to 'bookworms' and 'hoarders' alike to clear their shelves, tidy their lofts and empty their garages by donating any unwanted children's books as part of the company's Big Book Drop.
Working in partnership with Pickfords, the UK's largest moving and storage company, Interserve staff from across the world are rallying round in a bid to collect a staggering 50,000 books by the 10 October, which will be delivered to some of the world's most disadvantaged children in the Philippines, South Africa, Chile and India.
The project, which is being run through the Interserve Employee Foundation, is part of the company's Literacy for Life initiative, with the aim of improving the life chances of disadvantaged children in many of the communities where Interserve operates.
Amanda Cardall, Corporate Marketing Manager for Interserve explains:
"It's proven that reading for pleasure improves youngsters' chances both at school and throughout life. So we wanted to make a difference and do something that all our staff could get involved in easily; and the results have been fantastic.
"Our people have done an amazing job at collecting new and used children's books and we're already well on our way to achieving our target. For example, at one of our international sites in Maroochydore; a small satellite town with a population of just 14,500 that sits about 90 kilometres north of Brisbane, Australia, our four dedicated staff have collected more than 6,600 books.
"Pickfords too has been working incredibly hard to organise the logistics of such a large-scale operation; delivering crates to each of our sites to house the growing piles of books and already on stand-by to collect the donations in the next few days – a task which will see their drivers travelling over 3,500 miles the length and breadth of the UK.
"Now, with only a few days left to go, we wanted to make one last plea to the great British public to do what they do best and get involved in a very worthy cause.
"It's very easy too. Simply email email@example.com before the 10 October and we can arrange to come and collect directly from you, no matter how many or how few books you have.
"We ideally want children's books for 1-15 year olds, either new or in good condition, but any non-children's editions will be sold to purchase more."
