Interserve consortium wins Peterborough renewable energy plant contract

by Interserve Press Office | Feb 04, 2013

Interserve, the international support services and construction group, has won a multimillion pound contract in joint venture with Babcock & Wilcox Vølund A/S to undertake the design, procurement and construction of a waste-to-energy plant for Viridor, on behalf of Peterborough City Council. The total contract value is circa £60 million with Interserve's share of the contract being circa £15 million.

The plant will be built to BREEAM sustainability criteria* which will be further enhanced through the use of local supply chains, creating employment in the local economy. Due for completion in 2015, the plant will eventually be able to generate up to 53,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year – equivalent to approximately 15 per cent of the annual electricity consumption of the area's households. It will treat some 85,000 tonnes of waste per year away from landfill.

Ultimately, the facility will offset the equivalent yearly CO2 produced by 2,800 family cars.

Adrian Ringrose, Interserve Chief Executive, said: "From a sustainability perspective it's vital that we find innovative ways to reduce the impact of the waste generated in our cities. The Peterborough facility is one such solution and will not only deal with the problem of waste in the city, but will also produce energy in a sustainable way, creating savings for the taxpayer and businesses in the area."
