Interserve, the international support services and construction group, has been selected by South West Water to form part of a team that will build the infrastructure and pipelines for a new £60 million water treatment plant to serve Plymouth and the surrounding area.
Interserve will undertake the works in partnership with Balfour Beatty, while global design and consultancy firms Arcadis and Pell Frischmann will be responsible for all the design work outside of the treatment process.
Construction is due to start at Roborough, just north of Plymouth, next month. The new, state-of-the-art works will replace the outdated treatment works at Crownhill in Plymouth, which was built in the 1950s and is reaching the end of its useful life.
Ian Renhard, Managing Director of Interserve’s construction business, said
“We have worked with South West Water as part of its H5O engineering delivery alliance since 2009 and we look forward to helping the company deliver a world-class facility that will be used for years to come, while also supporting the local economy and employment in the region.”
The new works will use cutting-edge treatment processes, designed and developed by PWN Technologies, and tested at a prototype facility at Crownhill from June 2013 until June 2015. The main construction will be finished by December 2017 and Crownhill will close in December 2018.
Mike Court, a Senior Project Manager at South West Water, said:
“We’re delighted to officially welcome our partners PWN Technologies, Balfour Beatty, Interserve, Arcadis and Pell Frishmann on board for what promises to be a very exciting and globally significant project.
“The new treatment works will meet the needs of Plymouth’s growing population and provide a secure, high-quality drinking water supply for the wider Plymouth area for generations to come.”
