What is an RSS feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a technique designed to allow information published on a website to be fed automatically to anyone who has subscribed to the feed. The destination of the information can be another website or intranet, a computer or a mobile device.

How do I read an RSS feed?

For desktop or laptop computers there are three options for reading RSS feeds:

  • An RSS reader, sometimes known as an RSS aggregator, which is a piece of software you install on your computer. This is fast and flexible, but is obviously tied to the specific machine you are using. RSS readers, both free and paid-for, are readily available for download on the web.
  • Access to a web-based reader such as Bloglines or NewsGator which allows you to log in and check your feeds in a similar way to web-based email accounts. This is more limited in terms of functionality but is accessible wherever you have an internet connection.
  • A browser with a built-in RSS reader. Most recent web browsers, including Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7 onwards, include RSS readers.

An rss-small icon on a website indicates that a feed is available. Once you have enabled one of the reading options above, simply follow the instructions provided with the reader. Typically this will involve clicking or sometimes right-clicking the icon and either specifying a destination for the feed or pasting a link into the appropriate place in the reader.

Most mobile devices can also accept RSS feeds, although it may be necessary to download third-party software to make this possible. Consult your device’s instructions for advice.

Once you have subscribed to a feed your reader will regularly check the source to see if any new information has been published. When it finds some it will relay it to the destination specified in the reader, which, depending on the reader's capabilities, may be in an email-like interface, a scrolling news-ticker, and alerts window or several other formats. Unsubscribing is completely under your control – just open your RSS reader and remove the link.
