Highways
Interserve is a leading contractor for the design and construction of new highways, structures and maintenance schemes. We are able to offer single-point solutions and totally integrated support to ensure that our clients receive the best possible service. Equally, we are open to joint venture arrangements such as for the Highways Agency 'Design Build Finance and Operate' (DBFO) schemes completed in the past, and for their managed motorway projects in the future.
We are a quick-response operator with services at any stage of an asset's lifecycle from finance and investment through consultancy and design to construction and maintenance. We offer a host of specialist services such as planning advice, risk management and traffic management as well as financial services such as transparent costing models and lifecycle costing techniques.
We have a dedicated Highways microsite Highways microsite where all our skills in the sector are brought together in one place.
Consult
Interserve offers professional advice and consultancy services that deliver real, measureable benefits. Our in-house consulting team of over 35 professionally-qualified engineers can assist in project management, design and programme management issues. For example:
- We assisted Dorset Engineering Consultancy in achieving planning permission for a new bridge over the River Avon in one of the most environmentally sensitive flood plains in the UK
- We worked closely in supporting the Highways Agency through seven public inquiries on the A1 and A38 schemes, all of which had successful outcomes
- With a scheme for a grade separated junction on the A30 at Merrymeet we were able to manage the process with initial objectors such that a public inquiry was unnecessary
Design
Excellent design is an essential part of successful project delivery. At Interserve, we offer design services through in-house resources, as well as in partnership with some of the UK's leading design consultants.
We strive to be involved as early as possible in our clients' projects, ideally from the initial project scoping and feasibility. This allows Interserve to input into how the project will take shape and add our experience in buildability, in-house technical expertise, experience from other similar schemes, knowledge of how much construction costs, and our knowledge of the potential implications of planning constraints. An example of our innovative approach incudes the design of bridge decks at A1 grade separated junction.
Contributing at the early stages of a project avoids unnecessary duplication of effort and offers greatest potential to add value. Interserve has found that integrated teamworking with the client, designer, cost-consultant, key subcontractors and suppliers is a tremendous by-product of this early involvement that leads to cost-effective, optimum solutions.
Build
Our aim is to do the work right first time, to the specified quality and objectives, and always seeking to improve our offering.
Our approach is inclusive, liaising with project stakeholders to ensure requirements are understood and can be delivered within agreed timescales.
Interserve's culture to exceed our customers' expectations drives our continuous improvement processes. Our people challenge the norm, aware of the pressure that exists on many of our clients' budgets to deliver 'more for less'.
Our processes and procedures include those of our suppliers and are designed to deliver projects with safety of the utmost importance for all involved.
Maintain
As a national contractor our maintenance capabilities derive from our regional presence. Major maintenance of both highways and structures is undertaken from all of our regional infrastructure offices. These include stand-alone contracts, such as those on the M1 and M62 motorways in the Midlands and work for the Highways Agency, although the majority have been undertaken in asset management framework agreements for highways and structures repairs across the country.
For this nature of work Interserve uses specialist skills in concrete and steelwork repairs, plant and equipment (including marine), traffic management, waste recycling, mechanical and electrical services.
Our solutions are tailored to customers' needs. Where 24/7 working is an affordable option, we have the experience in shift management to coordinate the works safely and optimise least disruption to the travelling public. If noise or vibration is a concern for local residents, we can offer quieter or alternative approaches. We are mindful that our offerings must be sustainable and cost-effective.
