The 33-year-old is one of more than 700 employees at the company who enrol on apprenticeships each year.
James’s first job with Interserve involved handling calls from customers with facilities management requests in 2009.
The father-of-three was promoted and given the opportunity to switch roles. As he eventually progressed into project management he was offered the opportunity to complete an Association Project Management (APM) PMQ qualification to help him learn the skills he needed.
The APM was part funded by Interserve. He also undertook a two-year Higher National Certificate in construction which consisted of day-release and study. James passed both courses this year, achieving a Distinction in both.
He said: “When I joined Interserve I’d assumed it was just a stop-gap before I did my police entrance exams.
“I fell into the industry, but Interserve gave me the confidence and support to build my career.
“The last two years have been an absolute whirlwind. Balancing my day job, study and family has been tough. But my managers have given me total support. Because of the encouragement I received and the belief they have shown in me, I want to give my best to Interserve.”
James now works in Interserve’s Central Projects team. He completed the HNC to give him a deeper understanding of his sector.
He said: “I wanted to go back to university because I was dealing with construction projects but had no construction knowledge. The course has filled that knowledge gap and that has enabled me to grow in my role.”
Jez Moore, head of projects, said: “James has worked incredibly hard to balance family life while carrying out his day job to a high standard. He has also completed both the APM and HNC – a truly remarkable achievement.
“The fact Interserve has supported James and gave him the opportunity to progress from working at a call centre through to his current role is fantastic. This perfectly illustrates how we invest in our people and encourage colleagues to reach their potential.
“We recognise that having the best possible staff group enables us to provide the best possible service to our customers.”
