Asset Support Framework North and South

The contracts include surfacing works, bridgeworks, technology related works, highway maintenance, strengthening and improvement works, and general road works. They are accommodating the majority of the HA Pinch Point programme for congestion relief.

The new frameworks run for three years with the option to extend by 12 months, and can include projects up to £15 million in value. Contracts include:

M1 Parapet Replacement (ASF South)

Comprising the replacement of the reinforced concrete parapets to two bridges, built in the 1950’s, that cross the M1 between junctions 11 and 12 in Bedfordshire. The bridges are two span reinforced concrete structures with parapets cast directly onto either side of the deck and used as access routes to a number of local farms.

Works included:

  • Saw cutting
  • Demolition
  • Planing / Surfacing
  • Waterproofing
  • Drainage

A12 Wellington Bridge Steel Beam and Concrete Repairs (ASF South)

The repair and refurbishment of Wellington Bridge, which carries the B1137 over the A12 between junction 20A and 20B near Hatfield Peverel, Essex.

Two recent bridge strikes had caused damage to the bridge steel girders and reinforced concrete deck.  In addition to the repairs, maintenance work was carried out to the bridge and carriageway, which included work on expansion joints, painting and resurfacing.

The impacts had caused distortion to three of the beams, and these were returned to their correct geometrical shape by heat straightening. Trials were undertaken in-situ to ascertain the required heating patterns. Extensive surveys, geometric surveys plus the advice of Geoff Booth, a heat straightening expert were utilized to successfully complete the repairs.

A38 Little Eaton and Markeaton (ASF North)

Involves partial signalisation of the A38 Markeaton Roundabout together with widening of the A38(T) approaches and the circulatory carriageway of the A38 Markeaton Roundabout as part of the capacity improvement works. The work involves the installation of a MOVA controlled signal arrangement, associated cable ducting, carriageway widening together with significant alterations to drainage and street lighting.
