Currently under construction, the 162,000 metres squared Mall of Egypt is being built in Cairo using formwork and shoring supplied by Interserve’s equipment services business, RMD Kwikform.
Due to open in September 2015, the two-storey structure will house 400 shops and 50 food and beverage outlets, as well as an indoor Ski Park and 6,500 car parking spaces, and is being built by Besix Orascom joint venture.
Faced with a tight build programme and numerous design challenges, RMD designers worked with the contractors at the early stages of planning, which helped identify and source the right equipment needed for the project, especially the complex Ski Park element. RMD supplied 1,300 tonnes of equipment, including modular steel shoring and a range of beams. It also constructed independent staircase towers providing safe access around the site.
In response to the challenge of supporting the construction of the sloping Ski Park, RMD engineers decided to use steel supports instead of timber to create the 12-degree slope of the ski slope, which ensured the right support for the 110 metre by 45.5 metre structure and halved the assembly time.
