Delivering outstanding environments at the Walton Centre

Delivering outstanding environments at the Walton Centre

Walton Hospital construction

The Walton Centre is the only specialist hospital trust in the UK which provides dedicated comprehensive neurology, neurosurgery, spinal and pain management services.

The Trust’s new development – the Sid Watkins Building – was delivered by Interserve in December 2014, bringing together rehabilitation, pain management, education facilities and relatives’ accommodation.

This first class building has patients and their families at the heart of the design and was developed in conjunction with staff and patient representatives. From the artwork incorporated throughout the finished building, to the fittings and furnishings, the emphasis was on the provision of a therapeutic environment, closer to that of a 5* hotel; promoting recovery in comfortable and homely surroundings.

Adding value – and an extra storey

The aspirations of the Trust were delivered ahead of schedule and within budget. Not only this, Interserve provided the Trust with an additional floor for free. On appointment, we demonstrated with the use of BIM and 3D modelling how our design and construction innovation could give the Trust a third storey.

Part of this extra space accommodates the inpatient brain injuries rehabilitation unit run by Mersey Care. This specialist service aids patients’ cognitive recovery and also allows Mersey Care to work collaboratively with The Walton Centre, enhancing care for their patients. As well as this, a new charitably funded Home from Home accommodation suite allows relatives of critically ill patients to stay overnight on site, in five star hotel standard facilities.

Reducing running costs

Reaching energy targets and reducing running costs are both critical success factors for any hospital development and the Interserve team took a unique method at The Walton Centre – using the ‘Fabric First’ approach. Based on Passivhaus principles we developed a fabric first calculator demonstrating potential energy savings versus payback; allowing the Trust to make informed decisions using holistic fully costed options.

The Metsec steel frame and prefabricated panel solution created by Interserve not only accelerated the programme and minimised disruption to the busy hospital site but the increased insulation of the fabric will also lead to:

  • 41 per cent reduction in fabric loss heat, generating £95,745 saving in engineering capital costs
  • 29 per cent reduction in carbon emissions, future proofing the building under the NHS Carbon Reduction Commitment until 2020
  • 96,400 kg of CO2 saved per annum
Total annual energy usage 21 GJ/100m³, some 14GJ/100m³ under the NHS benchmark
  • 15 per cent reduction in overall energy usage
