Harwich Flood Barriers

The refurbishment of Harwich Town Floodgates that benefited from Interserve’s technical skills and experience to deliver a logistically challenging scheme for the community.

Harwich Flood BarriersThe town of Harwich has historically suffered from East Coast Flood events. The serious flooding of 1953 where 270 properties were affected was followed by a further significant event in 1978. The impact of these events initiated the construction of a sheet pile and reinforced concrete sea wall to the low lying perimeter areas of the town in 1984. The wall provides protection to a 1 in 200 year level event. 752 residential properties, 87 commercial premises, and other infrastructure assets such as the railway, rely on this level of protection should another flood event occur.

With significant surface corrosion, and many seals and fittings broken, ineffective or missing on the wall, the chosen option was to strip down, repair and refurbish the walls ineffective parts. The works were to generally replace like for like, improve any weaknesses in the original design and improve usability, bringing all aspects into line with current legislation and Health and Safety requirements.

Regular updates were sent to the Town Council and other local organisations to keep the community informed of the works progress. A public drop in session was held on the Town Quay where an Environment Agency ‘Floodline Trailer’ provided information about the project and the affected areas. The Client and Designers collaborated to produce a presentation to encompass historic, current and future outlook for the towns flood defences, which was well received by the community. The project achieved zero reportable injuries or incident.
