Interserve has won the Learning and Career Development award at this year's British Institute of Facilities Management
(BIFM) awards, in recognition of the company's commitment to professional skills training across the organisation.
The company was also highly commended in the Service Provider of the Year category for Project Armada - a 25 year PFI project to create, operate and maintain the Ministry of Defence's new single-living and mess accommodation in Devonport naval base in Plymouth.
This is the third year running that Interserve has received an award at the annual ceremony, and follows on from them winning the PFM 2011 Partners in Skills Development in FM Award. These awards are testament to the company's approach to career development; an approach which has seen more than a 200 per cent increase in training days and an innovative move towards the use of mobile learning across their highly dispersed workforce resulting in a 550 per cent increase in e-learners in the last year alone.
This success is underpinned by Interserve's career pathway, which offers every employee a variety of professional career routes tailored to their needs, from operatives, to team leaders and middle management through to senior management.
As part of this approach Interserve has increased its apprenticeship recruitment by 80 per cent, supported by a wide range of in-house workshops alongside literacy and numeracy skills training. They have also been instrumental in piloting and delivering a range of industry-first programmes across the business, including the Facilities Management NVQ Level 3 and the Cleaning, Hard Services and FM apprenticeships. Many of these have been delivered in partnership with professional bodies, such as, RICS and Asset Skills and are designed to ensure every employee has the opportunity to progress, at whatever stage of their career. Interserve was also the first company to pilot the full membership and associated membership to RICS and was the first organisation to have successful graduates through these programmes.
Bruce Melizan, executive director at Interserve added, "As a service provider, our key differentiator is the quality of our people and our aim is to provide all of our employees with the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
"These awards are not down to the efforts of select individuals alone. It is a real company-wide effort and is due to the commitment of all of our 29,000 employees working hard to deliver quality and value for our clients."
"I am proud that at Interserve we have been able to pioneer a set of development tools that can be used across the facilities management industry and am looking forward to the challenge of developing these further to support our employees as they work with us."
