Interserve starts work to bring Newcastle’s iconic co-op building back to life

by Interserve Press Office | Jun 13, 2014

Interserve starts work to bring Newcastle’s iconic co-op building back to lifeInterserve Plc, the international support services and construction group, has started construction work on the historic former Co-operative department store in Newcastle city centre, a project which will provide more than 450 jobs locally and boost local businesses.

The iconic Grade II listed former department store, which was recently sold by the Co-operative Group to DTZ Investment Management (DTZIM), is being fully redeveloped by Interserve to create a mixed-use scheme, incorporating retail and leisure units on the ground and basement floors as well as a 184 bed hotel operated by Premier Inn.

Interserve, which is managing the project’s delivery on behalf of DTZIM, expects more than 600 people to work on the project up until its completion in December 2015 and aims for 80 per cent of those staff to come from the North East area. Interserve also aims to place 80 per cent of the project’s £17m contract value with local businesses.

The iconic art deco building extends to nearly 170,000 sq ft over six floors and has been a feature of the city’s skyline since it opened in the 1930’s. With its twin towers, sweeping curves, huge windows and marble staircases, the city-centre building was once Newcastle’s most elegant shopping outlet.

Interserve – now 11 weeks into the project - is working closely with the local authority conservation team on the redevelopment of the building, which has suffered significant deterioration in recent years during which it has been largely unoccupied.

“It is great to see many of the iconic features of the building being sensitively replaced or restored while fully modernising the building for future tenants,” said Interserve Developments Director Dan White. “The collaborative approach between Interserve, DTZIM and Premier Inn to get this project off the ground will result not just in the rejuvenation of an iconic local building but provide significant local employment opportunities and a boost for the economy of Newcastle and surrounding areas.”
