Purple Futures takes over running of probation and rehabilitation services

by Interserve Press Office | Feb 01, 2015

Purple Futures - An Interserve-led partnershipPurple Futures, a new partnership of private sector, charities and social enterprise, today begins work providing probation and rehabilitation services on behalf of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for offenders across five areas of the UK.

Purple Futures, led by Interserve, the UK-based FTSE-listed support services and public services company, together with the charities Addaction, Shelter and P3, and the social enterprise 3SC, will be managing services aimed at low-medium risk offenders for the next seven years in:

  • Cheshire & Greater Manchester
  • Hampshire & Isle of Wight
  • Humberside, Lincolnshire & North Yorkshire
  • Merseyside
  • West Yorkshire

The partnership has now assumed legal ownership of the five Community Rehabilitation Companies (CRCs) and the management of around 2,000 probation service personnel. The five CRCs account for around 40,000 offenders each year, according to Ministry of Justice (MoJ) data.

As well as managing low-to-medium risk offenders, the work will now include provision for offenders who have left prison after serving sentences of less than 12 months. This group was previously not part of the remit of the Probation Service.

Yvonne Thomas, Managing Director of Justice at Interserve, lead partner of Purple Futures, said:

“We are confident in our plans and are excited to start working with our partners and our new colleagues in the CRCs to build an integrated approach to the rehabilitation of offenders. We will provide opportunities to reform for all - but always with the safety of both the public and our staff as our priority.”

The services form part of the MoJ’s Transforming Rehabilitation (TR) programme, and for the first time sees business working with local specialist and voluntary groups to provide support to offenders, to improve their life chances on release and reduce reoffending rates.
