OFSTED raises Crawshaw Academy to 'Good'Crawshaw Academy in Leeds has shed its ‘Special Measures’ status in just 18 months, and is now rated as ‘Good’ by the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted) following a recent inspection.

Lead inspector Katrina Gueli said the quality of teaching at Crawshaw Academy, a mixed school for 11-18 year olds, had improved markedly since the last inspection in January 2014, leading to good progress for pupils in Years 7 to 11. She said the close monitoring of pupil progress and actions taken to tackle underachievement had contributed to raising standards and narrowing gaps in performance between different groups of pupils.

Gueli remarked on the ‘excellent leadership’ of the Academy’s Principal, Adam Daly, which had been instrumental in accelerating the pace of the improvement since June 2014, and praised the school’s culture and its staff’s focus on securing the best possible outcomes for pupils. The good behaviour and positive attitude of the school’s pupils was also praised.

Adam Daly, Principal of Crawshaw Academy said:

“This is a terrific outcome and recognises how the students and staff have risen to the challenge and put this school back where it should be. I would like to thank them all for their efforts and determination in helping us achieve this turnaround so quickly.

“I would also like to thank our parents for their continued support, as well our partners at the Interserve Academies Trust and the Red Kite Alliance whose backing has been invaluable.”

Interserve Academies Trust (IAT), an independent not-for-profit charitable company supported by FTSE250 listed Interserve plc, assumed sponsorship of the school last September, forming a partnership with the Red Kite Alliance, a group of schools and institutions which share their skills and experience to help improve schools across Yorkshire and the Humber.

Ofsted said the support provided by IAT and Red Kite Alliance had enabled the school to tackle the weaknesses found at the last inspection, which led to the school being placed in ‘Special Measures’ in March 2014.

As Academy sponsor, IAT is responsible for running the school; shaping the curriculum, and delivering education for students based on strong school improvement, sound leadership and governance, skilled management, and close links with local communities and employers. The Trust intends to take on the sponsorship of two further Academies next year.

Pudsey MP Stuart Andrew, who recently attended Crawshaw’s awards evening, said:

“The improved Ofsted rating reflects the great work the staff, teachers and students have put in over the last year and a half. Crawshaw is making great progress and having a good school at the heart of our local community is a real boost for parents and pupils alike.”
