by Interserve press office | Oct 12, 2017

Interserve wins Birmingham mixed-use redevelopment contractInterserve, the international support services and construction group, has won a multi-million pound contract to transform a major brownfield site in the Selly Oak area of Birmingham into a mixed-use, retail-led development.

On behalf of The Harvest Partnership, a joint venture between Landsec and Sainsbury’s, Interserve is to construct a new Sainsbury’s superstore, 418-bed student accommodation, 11 retail units and parking facilities. The company will also prepare the site for an 8-pump petrol filling station, undertake hard and soft landscaping, and create a footbridge over a canal.

Construction is now underway on what will be known as ‘Selly Oak Shopping Park’. The project will be phased, with completion of the shops anticipated in autumn 2018, followed soon after by the opening of the Sainsbury’s store. The student accommodation will be completed in time for the start of the 2019 academic year.

In addition to the new foodstore, other confirmed retailers so far include M&S Simply Food, Next, JD Sports, Superdrug, Wilko, Card Factory, Costa and Nandos.

Gordon Kew, Managing Director of Interserve said:

“Our Birmingham roots mean we are very proud of our long association with the city, where we have built many landmark projects. Undertaking this major redevelopment enables us to continue contributing to its future prosperity.”

Chris Fleetwood, Development Director for Landsec said:

“We are delighted to announce the start of construction of Selly Oak Shopping Park and the appointment of Interserve, who will transform this former industrial site into an attractive destination. Selly Oak Shopping Park will create new jobs and have a prime retail and restaurant line-up.”

Michael Adenmosun, Mixed-use Development Manager for Sainsbury’s, commented:

“We’ve been a part of the Selly Oak community for over 25 years, so we’re pleased to be working with Landsec on the regeneration of this site into a new thriving retail centre for Selly Oak.”
