Interserve successfully deliver second major project for the University of YorkInterserve, the international support services and construction group, has successfully completed its latest project for the University of York, the £27 million Piazza Learning Centre.

The scheme, designed by architects Race Cottam Associates and project managed by Faithful and Gould, is a key element in the University's development plan for Campus East. The landmark building is centred around a mature oak tree with expansive views across the lake.

The new building provides new teaching facilities with 36 flexible learning spaces that include two laboratories, as well as a 350-seat auditorium, 100-seat lecture room, a feature library, offices and a 300-seat restaurant, all spread across 6,800 square metres.

Interserve worked in collaboration with mechanical and electrical partner NG Bailey on the scheme. Realising the University’s aspirations for wow factor visuals, the £4.2 million mechanical and electrical works delivered feature LED lighting installations in the atrium, restaurant and library, which helped the project achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.

John Gittins, divisional director at Interserve, said:

“I am really proud of the team’s performance in safely delivering this world class facility at the University of York. It is a fantastic building and reflects the University’s commitment to provide an outstanding student experience.

This is our second major project for the University, our first project being the Biology Phase 2 building on the Campus West and it has been a truly collaborative approach. Not only has it been delivered within budget, on time to a really high quality, but we have provided significant added value by creating local employment and apprenticeship opportunities. The project has also been a real showcase for the construction industry with nearly 500 visitors during the construction period.”

The new building will be used by the University’s International Pathway College (IPC), as well as providing additional teaching space for Campus East. The IPC, a joint venture between the University of York and Kaplan, provides academic preparation programmes for international students prior to them progressing to their undergraduate and postgraduate studies within the University.

The site was registered and monitored independently through the Considerate Constructors Scheme and achieved an exemplar five star rating. The project team received a certificate of performance ‘Beyond Compliance’ for developing and implementing a number of on-site innovations, including a visual sound indicator to help protect the workforce’s hearing.
