Interserve marks progress on Leicester’s Glenfield Hospital mental health unit with topping out ceremony

by Interserve Press Office | Oct 01, 2019

CAMHS topping out ceremonyInterserve Group Limited, the international support services, construction and equipment services group, and Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust have celebrated a key milestone in the construction of the new specialist mental health care unit for young people with a special topping out ceremony.

Interserve Construction was awarded the £8m contract to deliver a new purpose-built, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) earlier this year to create a 15-bed unit at Glenfield Hospital opposite the Bradgate Mental Health Unit. It is due to open in August 2020.

In construction, topping out is a builders' rite traditionally held when the last beam is placed atop a structure during its construction.

At the traditional topping out ceremony Trust chair, Cathy Ellis, was raised in a cherry picker to symbolically fix the last bolt in position on the building’s steel frame. She was watched by an audience of key stakeholders including the Lord Mayor of Leicester, local MPs, councillors, service users and local residents. The Trust’s staff also launched a charitable appeal to raise funds for additional sensory lighting and sports equipment for the unit.

Paul Williams, LPT Head of Service for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, said: “The new CAMHS unit will help us fulfil our vision to support more children and young people locally, which is so important, and we are delighted with Interserve’s progress on the new unit.”

Richard Scarrott, Divisional Director at Interserve Construction, said: “We’re delighted to have reached the topping out stage on this much needed mental health facility for the children and young people of Leicestershire. This continues our successful ten-year relationship with Leicestershire Partnership Trust and demonstrates the Trust’s confidence in our ability to successfully deliver their build programme.

“The CAMHS project for the Trust is in line with Interserve’s strategy to build on our capabilities and continued success as a significant partner to the UK’s healthcare sector which remains a key area for our continued growth.”
