Interserve Group Limited, the international support services, construction and equipment group has been selected by the Department of Education (DfE) to design and build the new Mo Mowlam Academy, through the DfE Construction Framework.
The new Mo Mowlam Academy is a special educational needs school for pupils, aged between five and 16 years old and will provide a safe and secure learning environment. The rebuild is part of the Government’s Priority School Building Programme which is new build, rebuilding and refurbishing school buildings programme.
The school will be relocating to the new building on Corporation Road in Redcar, from its current home in Grangetown in Middlesbrough. The new building will provide improved facilities and learning opportunities for pupils and staff and allow for an increased capacity of 100 pupils.
Interserve Construction has significant wide-ranging experience of delivering world-class special education facilities. This latest contract win follows similar SEN(D) projects in Bristol, Hereford, Warwickshire and Manchester and aligns with the company’s strategic focus on the education sector.
Works commenced on site in February 2020 and are due to completion in winter of 2021.
Mark Gardham, Regional Director at Interserve Construction, said: ““Interserve Construction’s appointment by the Education & Skills Funding Agency on this project is a real testament to the expertise within our team and our excellent track record in delivering some of the best education facilities in the UK where have demonstrated our capabilities on major landmark projects.
“We are delighted to be working with the DfE and the Trust to deliver the new academy, providing greatly improved specialist facilities for students as well as an enhanced learning environment.”

Note to editors:
The Department for Education’s £4.4 billion Priority School Building Programme is rebuilding or refurbishing those school buildings in the very worst condition across the country. There are two phases of the programme, covering a total of 537 schools.
The majority of the 260 schools in the first phase of the programme were opened in their new or refurbished buildings by the end of 2017, two years earlier than originally planned. Under the second phase of the programme, PSBP2, the DfE plans to have all schools open in their new/refurbished buildings by the end of 2021.
