Interserve Construction installs suite of COVID-19 decontamination units at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool

by Interserve Press Office | Jun 01, 2020

Interserve Group Limited, the international support services, construction and equipment group, has installed a suite of decontamination units at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool to support the NHS foundation trust’s response to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The contract follows Interserve Construction’s recent success in delivering the new NHS Nightingale Hospital Birmingham to the NHS to treat COVID-19 patients.

Interserve Construction was appointed to install and maintain 60 decontamination shower units. Initially the team delivered 15 decontamination units to allow hospital staff to shower after each shift and protect front line workers in the hospital from COVID-19.

Interserve also set up a further 45 shower units and has been engaged to maintain all 60 showers, cleaning them daily, stocking them up with shower gels, towels, and emptying waste and removing dirty laundry to be cleaned.

Phil Shaw, Divisional Director, Interserve Construction, said: “The Interserve team at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital turned the project around in just four days to provide front-line NHS staff with the opportunity to shower after their long shifts prior to going home helping to protect them and their families from COVID-19.

“Interserve Construction and Interserve Engineering Services together with our contractors can be justly proud of the work we are delivering to the NHS at this difficult time. As a long-term contractor to the NHS, under several framework agreements, we can bring considerable experience and wide-ranging capabilities to deliver even at the shortest notice.”

The new Nightingale hospital at the National Exhibition Centre was officially opened by His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge and Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP, Secretary of State for Health & Social Care via a video link. It will initially provide 800 patient beds equipped with ventilators.

As the principal contractor, Interserve Construction delivered the first phase of the hospital on behalf of the NHS and the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. More than 400 employees and contractors and 60 Gurkhas from the British Army worked more than 86,000 construction hours on the project.
