Interserve Group Limited, the international support services, construction and equipment group, has been awarded the £15.9 million contract to build the new St Anne's School and Sixth Form College, as well as a separate supported housing development in Hessle near Hull for East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of the YORbuild Framework.
Interserve Construction plan to begin work on site in September to hand over the new school in January 2022. When complete, the school for children and young people with severe and complex disabilities will give pupils and staff access to a modern learning environment to support the learning and development 160-strong student cohort.
The new building will include a single-storey school with residence for overnight short breaks, and a separate three-storey accommodation block, which will be split by a spine wall. The supported housing scheme will provide 44 one and two bedroom apartments for rent which will be allocated by the council to households on the housing register that meet the eligibility criteria. The scheme will enable adults with care and support needs to live independently with access to 24-hour on-site care and support when needed.
The new school will be designed to accommodate the growing needs of both pupils and the local community and it will be tailored to meeting and exceeding the needs of modern school education provision.
Interserve Construction’s appointment underscores the company’s wide-ranging experience and capabilities in delivering first class educational facilities in the UK in line with its strategy for securing places on major framework agreements including the new £1.5bn YORbuild Major Works frameworks; and contracts with long-term partners including the Department for Education.
John Gittins, Divisional Director at Interserve Construction, said: “This is a really important opportunity for us and the student community at St Anne's School and Sixth Form College. As we advance through the COVID-19 crisis it is really important we provide opportunities to rebuild the economy through local employment, training and apprenticeships.”
“Our appointment by East Riding of Yorkshire Council to build the new St Anne’s School further strengthens our position as one of the leading construction companies serving the UK education sector and follows the team’s recent appointments to build special needs schools in Oldham, Sheffield and Redcar.”
Lesley Davis, Head Teacher, St Anne's School and Sixth Form College, said: “I am delighted that the planned construction of the new school has now been announced and would like to thank the local authority for this investment.
"The school, sixth-form college and residential short-break provision in the new development will enable our children and young people to continue their education and social care journey in an exceptionally well-designed state of the art building.
"Staff and governors have worked closely with the architect Paul Bird, on the detailed design of this important complex and look forward to continuing to do so along with Interserve as the building commences.
"This is a very exciting project and one that I am proud to be involved in. I am sure that our staff, governors, and parents will agree that this is a very welcome development and we all look forward to relocating to our new building in about a year’s time. We aim for it to be a centre of excellence for special educational needs education in the East Riding of Yorkshire. "
