Interserve Group Limited, the international Support Services, Construction and Equipment Services group, is a finalist in the prestigious Green Apple Environment Awards for services delivered on the company’s total facilities management contract with the University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Trust.
Interserve’s Communities & International business unit delivers a range of vital services to UCLH including cleaning, portering and maintenance. As part of the contract, the company also delivers a Sustainability Calendar, which includes a range of initiatives and events aimed at reducing wastage and promoting environmental best practice.
The awards are presented every year at the Palace of Westminster to companies, councils and communities who are doing their best for the environment. The Green Apple Environment Awards is run by the Green Organisation – an independent, international, non-profit, non-political environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
Interserve’s Communities & International business unit employs in the region of 5,000 people involved in the delivery of critical total facilities management services to hospitals, half-a-dozen healthcare centres, the London Ambulance Service and the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service. The business unit also delivers best-in-class services to local authorities, 150 schools and police forces including West Yorkshire Police.
The delivery of the Sustainability Calendar is led by Interserve’s George Weekes, Account Manager, and Lydia Carrington, Sustainability Consultant, together with the contract’s Sustainability Champions and a team of committed frontline colleagues.
As part of the Interserve award entry, the company demonstrated how it had:
drastically reduced the quantity of paper used at UCLH by adopting electronic systems - saving 795 kilograms worth of paper
organised a litter-pick on Brighton beach
replaced plastic cutlery, porridge pots, hot beverage cups and lids with biodegradable alternatives at the Trust’s catering department – thereby removing 341,000 pieces of plastic from landfill.
The Green Apple Environment Awards is hosted on 23rd November, when Interserve will find out if it has won a gold, silver or bronze award.
