Opportunities for all

How can business affect real change? Opportunities for all

How can business effect real change?

Interserve redefines the future for people and places. As a large employer with 80,000 employees we know that the biggest impact we can have is through creating skills and opportunities in the communities where we work.

We recognise, however, that access to skills, training and employment is not always open to all on an equal basis. There are barriers that prevent some people and groups in our communities from reaching their full potential. Interserve’s ‘Opportunities For All’ campaign is committed to shining a light on what business can do to give everyone the chance to succeed – be that a second chance, a new start, extra support to get on or just a different approach to the workplace wherever it is needed.

Opportunities For All lays down a marker for the business community to rally round. First and foremost, Interserve has stepped back to look at what is happening on the ground to drive change. We want to share our experiences with other from across the public, private, third and social enterprise sectors to generate real momentum around this project.

We started this campaign by looking at how businesses can provide ex-offenders with the skills and employment opportunities that will help to turn their lives around.

Recent research showed that less than a third (29%) of prisoners had been in paid employment at some point during the first two years after their release from prison, with only 15% identified as working at the two-year mark.

We know that work can transform lives and stop re-offending, so the benefit society if we make progress is immense.

Recently we focused on how we help to support our ex-service men and women back when they leave the military – helping them to realise their ambitions and transition back in to work.

Again, recent data shows that working age veterans are nearly twice as likely to be unemployed as their equivalents in the UK general population.

As a long-term supporter that works closely with the armed forces, we want to look at what more business can do to in this space.
